In a groundbreaking move to bridge the healthcare gap in Ghana, DrDoGood, a health tech startup, has launched a USSD code telemedicine platform that enables patients in rural and off-grid communities to access quality healthcare services remotely.

The platform, accessible via a simple USSD code *920*336#, allows patients to receive timely medical consultations, prescriptions, and referrals from qualified healthcare professionals.

This innovative solution reduces the need for lengthy and costly travel to urban centers, making it particularly crucial for expectant mothers who can now receive prenatal care and remote monitoring. By increasing access to quality healthcare services, the platform is expected to improve health outcomes, reduce healthcare costs, and enhance the overall well-being of Ghanaians.

According to Klenam Fiadzoe, Chief Partnership Officer at DrDoGood Health, “Our USSD-based healthcare service will leverage existing basic mobile infrastructure to bridge the healthcare gap for the millions of Ghanaians who lack access to smartphones or reliable internet.” This approach is timely, considering Ghana’s mobile internet penetration and reliability statistics.

USSD, or Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, is a communication protocol that allows for sending short text messages and interacting with a network application without needing a data connection or incurring SMS costs. The basic USSD menu currently includes actions such as:

- Speak to a doctor
- Order and manage prescriptions
- Access HPV Test kits

DrDoGood plans to build further innovation on the USSD platform, focusing on solutions that address basic needs. This initiative has the potential to revolutionize healthcare delivery in Ghana, especially in rural and underserved areas.

By leveraging USSD technology, DrDoGood’s telemedicine platform is poised to make a significant impact on the health and wellbeing of Ghanaians. As the company continues to innovate and expand its services, it is likely to play a crucial role in shaping the future of healthcare in Ghana.
